Harley Quinn has replaced her beloved "Mistah J," a.k.a. The Joker, as the most popular adult Halloween costume of the year, according to Google Canada.

The search engine has released its annual list of the 10 most-searched Halloween costumes of the season, with Harley Quinn at the top as the most-searched costumes among adults, and PAW Patrol listed as the top trending kids' costume of 2016.

Harley Quinn costumes have been popular at comic book conventions for over 20 years, but the character smashed into the mainstream this year in "Suicide Squad," portrayed by Margot Robbie. The character was not listed at all on last year's top 10 list, when the Joker was at No. 1.

Joker tumbled to fifth spot on the list in 2016, despite the appearance of a new on-screen version played by Jared Leto in "Suicide Squad."

Pokemon characters, especially Pikachu, ranked second on the list, fuelled by the franchise's resurgence this summer with the release of "Pokemon Go."

Deadpool also cracked the list at No. 8, off the strength of the film starring Ryan Reynolds that came out early in the year. The character was also something of a geeks-only favourite until 2016.

The full list went as follows:

  1. Harley Quinn
  2. Pokemon characters (especially Pikachu)
  3. Ghostbuster
  4. Catwoman
  5. The Joker
  6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
  7. Zombie
  8. Deadpool
  9. Stormtrooper
  10. Bride

Aside from the top-ranked PAW Patrol costumes, kids' favourite choices were pulled from the worlds of superheroes, "Star Wars" and fantasy. Yoda and Chewbacca ranked second and third on the list, followed by Iron Man. Supergirl was the top female-only character on the list, inspired by the new television show.
