Lindsay Lohan failed to show up for a planned appearance at the Venice Film Festival.

The 27-year-old actress -- who has vowed to stay sober after recently being released from rehab -- was supposed to promote her latest movie 'The Canyons' at the festival on Friday but no reason was given for her absence.

Director Paul Schrader said: "For the last 16 months I've been hostage, by my own choosing, to a very talented but unpredictable actress. She was supposed to be here, she said she would be, but she is not.”

While he found Lindsay exhausting to work with, Schrader admitted she worked hard but the process was exhausting for her.

“One of her problems as an actor is she has a very hard time faking things.”

Despite her no-show in Venice, Lindsay has thrown herself back into work since her 90-day court-ordered rehab for substance abuse at the Cliffside Malibu treatment facility ended, filming a cameo for sitcom 'Eastbound & Down' and conducting a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.

She is also wanted for a comedy series being developed by Danny McBride for HBO and it has just been revealed 'Saturday Night Live' is hoping to lure her back to host the season opener.

A source said: "'Saturday Night Live' has approached Lindsay to host the show again, and they were talking about the season opener."

Lindsay is keen to think about the offer as she is a fan of the show.

The source explained: "She is definitely considering doing it. She loves the show and the people involved."
