The United Nations unveiled the "world's happiest playlist" on Friday, as part of International Day of Happiness celebrations, and to mark the seventieth anniversary of the organization.

The UN has teamed up with artists such as John Legend, Ed Sheeran, James Blunt, David Guetta, Cody Simpson and even the Pharell Williams -- the Grammy-winning artist who wrote the song "Happy" -- to deliver the positive playlist.

The six songs on the playlist span five different decades, with the oldest release being James Brown’s ‘I Got You (I Feel Good)’ and the newest being John Legend’s ‘Made to Love.’

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement that the project is aimed at spreading awareness in the international community of a need to promote the happiness of all peoples.

"On this day, we are using the universal language of music to show solidarity with the millions of people around the world suffering from poverty, human rights abuses, humanitarian crises and the effects of environmental degradation and climate change," Ban said.

Ban nominated "Signed, Sealed, Delivered," by Stevie Wonder, as a song on the playlist.

People were encouraged to take part in the campaign, and to tweet their favourite uplifting track with the hashtag #HappySoundsLike.

Famous musicians and actors have also chimed in to advocate for their go-to happy songs.

Britney Spears wrote on the campaign's website that her pick is "Kiss," by Prince, because she "can't help but get up and dance" when the song is playing. ‘Kiss’ ended up on the UN’s final list.

James Blunt suggested "We are young," by Fun, because it is "a celebration of the moment."

And Nicole Scherzinger picked "Three Little Birds," by Bob Marley, saying that it is a "feel-good, uplifting song." It also made the final happiness playlist.

The campaign is also being supported by the music streaming service MixRadio.

International Day of Happiness was established by the UN in 2012, with the goal of celebrating unity and to call for "more inclusive equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes sustainable development, poverty eradication, happiness and the well-being of all peoples."

Last year's celebrations featured a campaign called the 24 Hours of Happiness. Participants were invited to post YouTube videos of themselves "demonstrating their happiness" to Pharrell Williams' 2013 hit "Happy."

The full playlist includes:

  1. ‘I Got You (I Feel Good)’ – James Brown and His Family (1964)
  2. ‘Kiss’ – Prince and The Revolution (1986)
  3. ‘Three Little Birds’ – Bob Marley and the Wailers (1977)
  4. ‘(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher – Jackie Wilson (1967)
  5. ‘Independent Women Pt. 1’ – Destiny’s Child (2000)
  6. ‘Made to Love’ – John Legend (2013)

Five of the six songs are available to hear on YouTube. Only Prince’s ‘Kiss’ is unavailable.
