Pop singer Cher is to make a grand return to cinema, having been cast in the sequel to 2008 musical comedy "Mamma Mia!"

Though her role remains under wraps, the US singer is now on board for July 2018's "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again."

It's to be Cher's first film since appearing opposite Christina Aguilera in musical drama "Burlesque" in 2010, and voicing a character in 2011 Kevin James animal comedy "Zookeeper."

She won a Best Actress Oscar for her leading role in romantic comedy "Moonstruck" (1987) after receiving a Supporting Actress nomination for earlier biographical drama "Silkwood," in which she appeared with one of the "Mamma Mia" leads, Meryl Streep.

Based on a stage musical of the same name, "Mamma Mia" centered around a wedding on a Greek island, to which the bride has invited three men she believes could be her father.

Her plan is to discover which of the men is her real dad, but the truth is not so easily discerned.

The original movie's soundtrack, itself an adaptation of the stage musical, was built around songs recorded and performed by ABBA in the mid-to-late 1970s and early 1980s; its title references 1975 single "Mamma Mia."

For the film, Amanda Seyfried played bride-to-be Sophie, with Meryl Streep as her mother, Donna, plus Julie Walters and Christine Baranski as the mother's close friends.

Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård and Colin Firth were all on hand as the potential fathers, with Dominic Cooper as Sophie's groom.

All eight are confirmed for the sequel, with six younger actors recruited to play more youthful versions of the older cohort, including Lily James and Jeremy Irvine.

Andy Garcia of "When a Man Loves a Woman" and "The Godfather Part III" has also joined the cast in another unnamed role.

Oliver Parker, who wrote Judi Dench and Bill Nighy comedy drama "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and its sequel, is to direct.
