Singer and winemaker Andrea Bocelli has lent his name and star power to an Italian wine produced in part by former prisoners.
Frescobaldi has tapped the world famous classical singer, who also comes from a long line of winemakers and owns a winery himself, to help promote its Gorgona 2013 wine, produced on the island of Gorgona, the smallest island of the Tuscan archipelago off the country’s northwest coast.
Produced with Vermentino and Ansonica grapes, the wine is also made with the help of former inmates from the island, in the goal of offering them work experience and teaching them about viticulture.
The project was launched last year and enlisted 50 inmates who had finished serving their time to help produce 2,700 bottles.
Bocelli is helping to promote the bottle by writing a message and signing a label.
“This project, which I have decided to support at the request of Lamberto Frescobaldi, entwines two of my passions; the vineyard of course, but also the Tuscan archipelago, a true paradise on Earth. Gorgona, the most enchanting of the islands and yet the one that has suffered the most, is worthy of such enterprising and visionary projects. Like this one, to which I gladly offer my support,” he said.
The wine can be found in Italy, US, Germany and Asia.
