BEIJING - An actor has become the latest Chinese celebrity to be detained in a crackdown on illegal drugs.
The official Xinhua News Agency says 40-year-old Gao Hu was detained by police for possession and use of marijuana and methamphetamine. Gao had a small part as a soldier in Zhang Yimou's 2011 movie "The Flowers of War."
A number of celebrities have been accused of drug offences following a declaration in June by President Xi Jinping that illegal drugs should be wiped out and that offenders would be severely punished.
Rising wealth and greater personal freedoms in China have been accompanied by increased use of methamphetamines and the party drugs Ecstasy and ketamine, leading to periodic police crackdowns.
