TORONTO - Deadmau5 and Madonna have declared a truce on Twitter after the Canadian electronic DJ slagged the Material Girl for making comments that he interpreted as glamorization of drug use.
The 53-year-old pop star's new album is titled "MDNA," which some have assumed is a reference to MDMA, also known as the drug ecstasy.
Deadmau5 also called out Madonna for a comment at the recent Ultra Music Festival in Miami, when she asked the crowd: "How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?"
Molly is a slang term for ecstasy.
The DJ from Niagara Falls, Ont., used his Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr blog accounts to slam Madonna with expletive-filled rants condemning her behaviour. He wrote a long blog post insisting that electronic music should no longer be closely tied to drug culture.
Rather than punching back, Madonna responded by simply tweeting "lovemau5" and an old photo of her wearing Minnie Mouse-style ears -- similar to what Deadmau5 wears while performing.
Text added to the photo reads: "From one mouse to another. I don't support drug use and I never have. I was referring to the song called 'Have you Seen Molly' written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my album."
That explanation seemed to have appeased the four-time Juno winner, whose real name is Joel Zimmerman.
"Fair enough, I was just voicing my concerns as I usually do. +1 respect for clearing it up personally," he tweeted to her.
"Communication is always best," reads a response from Madonna's Twitter account. "You should have called me first, we could have cleared it up "privately." ;) See you on the road."
Deadmau5 added that he considers the feud over.
"Well there you have it kids. I've said what I needed to say, which I'll still stand by, and so did she. Life goes on. No more talk of that."
