CTV News has picked up top honours for its broadcast journalism, winning 13 national awards at the annual association of electronic journalists' gala held in Toronto Saturday.

CTV National News with Lisa LaFlamme won the prestigious Bert Cannings Award for Best Network Broadcast at the Radio Television Digital News Association's 50th annual national conference.

Bell Media properties have now won 47 national and regional RTDNA awards, including five honourable mentions.

"It is an honour to be recognized by the RTDNA for the great work produced by CTV News," CTV News president Wendy Freeman said Saturday.

"The CTV News team once again is recognized as best-in-class across the country. The passion, persistence, and service to communities and the nation in the work that these journalists do is truly remarkable and so deserving of the recognition they received by our industry tonight."

Other notable wins include best newscast for one of CTV Edmonton's broadcasts on the Slave Lake disaster and a repeat best newscast win for CTV Barrie's "News at Six."

CP24 won in the best spot news category for its coverage of the death of Toronto police Sgt. Ryan Russell, while W5 picked up the top investigative category that recognized its probe of police shootings and the failings of the civilian Special Investigations Unit.

CTV Ottawa news director Peter Angione was also honoured with the RTDNA Distinguished Service Award, and CTV Atlantic's Steve Murphy was given a Lifetime Achievement Award (Atlantic Region, Television).
