Mercedes Stephenson is the Parliamentary Reporter for CTV News Channel and Friday Host of CTV’s daily marquee political program Power Play. Stephenson joined CTV’s Parliamentary Bureau in 2011.
Stephenson covers live, breaking news stories from the nation’s capital, including CTV News specials such as the Federal Budget and Remembrance Day. She also contributes to CTV National News, BNN, CP24, and Canada AM.
Embedding with the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR), Stephenson traveled to Niger in 2014 to cover CSOR training African militaries to fight terrorist threats. Her exclusive story “Secret Warriors” aired on CTV’s W5.
Stephenson provides in depth coverage of Parliament, federal politics, the Supreme Court of Canada, national security and foreign affairs. Stephenson has provided live reporting of major events including the Senate Scandal, the crisis in Ukraine, and the Boston Bombing. Military reporting and veterans’ issues are part of Stephenson’s beat, she was part of the CTV team that investigated military suicides among returning veterans, leading to new reforms.
Traveling across Canada and to Afghanistan, the U.S., and Africa, Stephenson has covered NDP and Liberal political conventions, Canada’s war in Afghanistan and the 2012 U.S. Presidential Election.
Stephenson is currently completing her Masters degree in Strategic Studies through the University of Calgary, focusing on information operations in Afghanistan. She has also studied political journalism at Georgetown University, interned at the Pentagon, and was a visiting student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for International Studies.
Stephenson was born and raised in Calgary but moved to Toronto to host a weekly public affairs television show and numerous documentaries. Her love of political journalism drew her to Ottawa, where she now resides.
