A Canada-wide arrest warrant has been issued for a mother who allegedly abducted her daughter and fled to Europe.

In May 2016, Tasha Brown contacted Saanich, B.C. police to report her estranged wife, Lauren Etchells, might have abducted their daughter, Kaydance Etchells. Police later confirmed that Etchells left the country on May 8, with their daughter and Etchells’ son on a WestJet flight to London, England, despite a court order that she couldn’t leave Vancouver Island.

Kaydance lived with Etchells full-time, while Brown had visitation rights. According to police, Brown’s visitation rights were to increase with the goal of joint custody.

“Kaydance should be in Canada celebrating her life, but instead her life is being hidden somewhere in the world,” Brown said at a police news conference on Monday.

In August, 2015, a judge ordered Etchells to surrender her and Kaydance’s U.K. passports after Brown found out Etchells had bought one-way plane tickets to Qatar. Etchells was also ordered not to apply for a Canadian passport for Kaydance.

According to police, in April 2016, Etchells falsely applied for and obtained a Canadian passport for Kaydance with a birth certificate that listed Etchells as the only parent.

According to Brown’s GoFundMe page, both Etchells and Brown had their names on their daughter’s birth certificate, but Brown had hers removed in March, 2015, in preparation for the family to move to the U.A.E. where homosexuality is illegal.

Etchells and Brown separated in July 2015, ending their plans to move to the U.A.E. Brown then asked Etchells to have her name reinstated on Kaydance’s birth certificate, but Etchells refused saying she wanted the freedom to travel with Kaydance without Brown’s permission. Brown had her name reinstated on Kaydance’s birth certificate in May 2016, after Etchells had left.

“What Lauren has done is taken away Kaydance’s freedom,” said Sgt. Jereme Leslie of the Saanich police. “We will go and get Lauren and bring her back on the strength of the warrant.”

According to police, Etchells, Kaydance and Etchells’ son arrived in London and went to France through the Channel Tunnel. They also say they are now all travelling on U.K. passports. Police do not believe that Kaydance is in any danger.

Etchells’ arrest warrant is based on one count of abduction by a parent and two counts of disobeying a court order.
