Via Rail says service has resumed along the Toronto-Montreal corridor after a fatal crash between a CN freight train and a vehicle at a crossing in eastern Ontario Wednesday morning.

The crash happened at approximately 10 a.m. on Tate Road, near Trenton, Ont., after a vehicle and a CN Freight train collided on the tracks that are also used by Via. After the crash, trains were being held in Belleville, Cobourg and Kingston, affecting approximately 700 Via passengerss, a CN railway operator told CTV Ottawa.

Quinte West Fire Department said the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 29-years-old. No one in the freight train was injured. It was travelling from Montreal to Toronto.

CN Rail says the crossing light and the gates were functioning at the time of the crash.

Via Rail spokesperson Mylene Belanger said six trains on the affected routes will be delayed between 30 minutes to 3 1/2 hours, but that the tracks where the collision occurred have been opened.

An investigation into the crash has been launched. OPP say that foul play is not suspected.
