A family friend says there was a rip in the screen covering a window where a 3-year-old Toronto boy fell to his death over the weekend.

Wallace Passos fell out of the window of a 17th floor apartment in the city's west end at approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The boy was rushed to hospital from the building on Hickory Tree Road, in the Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue area, but he succumbed to his injuries that afternoon.

Police told CTV Toronto's Colin D'Mello that the family had been celebrating the boy's sister's 14th birthday at the time of the incident.

A family friend who had been at the party said the toddler had been running around prior to the fall, and the window was open because it was hot in the apartment.

Though the friend noticed the rip in the screen, no one paid much attention to it until the boy fell from the window.

Friends told CTV Toronto that one second Passos was there and the next he was gone. They began asking where the boy was, before realizing what had happened.

"He was a good kid," the friend said.

“I just want him back,” the friend added, trying to hold back tears.

She said Passos' mother is pregnant, and the boy would have become a big brother in the next month.

On Monday, a small memorial had formed outside of the apartment building, with bouquets of flowers and stuffed toys being left for the little boy at the base of a tree.

Friends said the family plans to hold a funeral for the toddler on Saturday.

Police told CTV Toronto that the case was still being investigated, but that it was unlikely any charges would be laid.
