A homeowner in the leafy Riverdale neighbourhood of Toronto called police Sunday after returning home to find bullet holes in her front door and her cat fatally injured inside.

Officers were called to the home Sunday afternoon when the homeowner, believed to be a mother of three in her 30s, returned home from a night out.

Police say she found bullet homes in her front door and the family cat bleeding from the abdomen. The pet was taken to an emergency veterinarian, but later died.

Area residents told police they heard loud noises in the early hours of Sunday morning but didn’t see anything unusual and thought the sounds were fireworks, so they didn’t call police.

Nearby residents told CTV Toronto the home is occupied by a woman in her 30s and three young children.

According to police, the bullet holes were only in the home’s main door and not an outer screen door, suggesting perhaps that the shooter may have opened the outside door before firing into the home.

Police have not released any further details on the shooting nor commented on whether they think it was a targeted or random shooting.

Shootings are rare in Riverdale, which is filled with family homes on quiet streets. One neighbour told CTV Toronto that, while the incident was “upsetting,” it doesn’t change her view of the area.

“This is a really safe neighbourhood,” resident Jill Worthy said.

“…It doesn’t make me feel worried about coming in and out of my house. I’m hoping to find out it was either targeted or completely random, or the act of a kid or who knows.”
