ST. PAUL, Alta. -- RCMP say three of their officers have been injured in a confrontation with a gunman in St. Paul, Alta.

Chief Supt. Randy McInnis says two of the officers were sent to Edmonton by air ambulance while the third remained in St. Paul.

The gunman was reportedly killed in the confrontation.

McInnis characterizes the situation as "mayhem" and says they are still in the process of "trying to get things under control."

St. Paul Mayor Glenn Andersen says the incident took place on the street in the middle of downtown St. Paul on Friday evening.

Images from the scene that have been posted to Twitter appear to show that a large black truck had been boxed in by RCMP vehicles in front of an ATB bank.

Andersen confirms that shots were fired but says both the RCMP officers and the gunman were in vehicles at the time.
