A 16-year-old Ottawa boy is under arrest and a second suspect remains at large after an elderly Quebec couple was kidnapped from their home overnight Saturday.

Police say the couple’s ordeal began when two suspects broke into their cottage in Bouchette, Que., near Maniwaki, about an hour-and-a-half north of Ottawa.

The suspects forced the couple into their own car and drove them to a barn two hours away in L’Isle-aux-Allumettes, near Pembroke, Ont. Police said the suspects, one of whom was armed, tied up the couple, fled the barn and drove away in the couple’s vehicle.

The victims, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s, untied themselves and managed to get to a nearby road where they flagged down a passing motorist. The two were admitted to hospital with minor injuries, and were expected to be released late Saturday.

The teen was arrested shortly after police found the couple’s abandoned vehicle in Pembroke Saturday morning.

Police have not said whether the suspects knew the couple. They have also not speculated on a motive.
