Police have identified the woman whose skull and other bones were found in a garbage bag near a ravine in a west Toronto neighbourhood on Wednesday.

The bones belonged to Rigat Essag Ghirmay, 28, whose partial remains were found in a duffel bag in May, 2013, according to police.

Adonay Zekarias, 42, was charged in Sept. 2013 with Ghirmay’s murder.

Zekarias is already in prison, after he was sentenced to life in prison last summer for the murder of Nighisti Semret, a 55-year-old hotel worker who was killed in Toronto in 2012.

Police said in 2013 that Ghirmay and Zekarias knew each other, although the nature of their relationship was unclear. Both emigrated to Canada from Eritrea, as did Semret.

A man who was walking in a park near an industrial area at around 2 p.m. Wednesday came upon the skull. Bones were later located nearby.

The ravine where the remains were found is isolated, located behind a vast industrial area and hidden from the houses that line the perimeter.

Area residents said they were surprised to learn about the grisly discovery.

“It’s scary to think that somebody lost their life so close to our home,” one woman said. “Hopefully it wasn’t violent.”
