A Quebec couple is facing charges over allegations of abuse involving one of their three young children.

The couple, who cannot be named to protect the identities of the children, made a brief court appearance in Sherbrooke Tuesday morning.

The parents are facing one count each of criminal negligence, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, failing to provide the necessities to a child and forcible confinement.

The couple has three children, aged four, five and six, together. The charges concern only one of the children, but all three were removed from the family’s home last week and placed in foster care.

A 14-year-old child from the father’s previous relationship was no longer living with the family at that point.

Police have not said why they visited the home last week, only revealing that they “received a piece of information,” according to CTV’s Vanessa Lee.

One of the children was found severely malnourished.

The mother, aged 27, and father, aged 34, will next appear in court on Friday for a bail hearing.

The Crown said Tuesday it will argue against bail for both parents. The Crown will argue against the mother’s release even though she is six months pregnant, Lee reported.
