A school bus carrying 25 children crashed and rolled over roughly 235 kilometres north of Winnipeg on Saturday, and at least 14 passengers have been sent to hospital.

An emergency helicopter and six ambulances responded to the scene in Matheson Island, Man. One adult and one youth were airlifted to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the RCMP. Both are said to be in stable condition.

Twelve more patients were transported to four hospitals in the area by ambulance and private vehicles.

The group of students from Berens River, Man. had attended a fiddle jamboree at Wanipigow Frontier School Division, according to Joanne Flett, the community administration officer for Matheson Island. The RCMP said they were between the ages of 12 and 15.

“There are some reporting significant injuries, but the extent of them, we do not know,” Dr. Myron Thiessen, the chief medical officer for Interlake Eastern Regional Health Authority, told CTV Winnipeg.

Authorities say the accident was reported after an individual driving along the road came across the bus and drove into cellphone range to call 911.

Berens River First Nation chief Hartley Everett’s nephew, who is eight or nine years old, was on the bus. Everett is not aware of his condition.

"We're hoping everyone is okay," he said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but the RCMP says that alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
