A group of former park wardens are giving Canadians a taste of the solitary mountain life with their original music, inspired from the landscapes they've protected for decades.

"The Wardens" are a musical trio from Alberta, made up of retired wardens Scott Ward, Bradley Bischoff and dispatcher Ray Schmidt.

Both Ward and Bischoff, who each play guitar, worked for Parks Canada for more than 30 years. Schmidt, who plays the bass, still works for Banff National Park.

The trio have already released two CDs, and say they have enough material for a third.

Schmidt said the group tries to make music that takes listeners into the wild with them.

"We would like to take people, bring them out there on the trail with us, and experience the things that we've experienced," he told CTV News.

In their music, they celebrate a time when being a warden meant doing many different tasks, from working with wildlife to avalanche control to law enforcement.

"You might be tranquilizing a bear in the morning and doing a mountain rescue in the afternoon, then saddling up the next day for a 10-day backcountry patrol," Scott said.

But despite some of the hardships and the weeks of solitude associated with the job, the wardens look back fondly on those days in the park.

"All of our songs that we write are so from the heart, and it's 65 years of blood, sweat and tears out there on the trail, in these wild places," Bischoff said.

The band has been performing now for four years, sharing their love of the landscape and all its rugged beauty.

Schmidt said he's happy to share this breathtaking part of Canada with others.

"What we're doing is taking people behind the Jack Pine curtain," he said.

The group has even garnered a compliment from a tough critic: an old cowboy, who told them what he thought of their songs.

"He came up to us after the show and said 'You know, I don't like music that much, but you guys are OK,'" Scott said with a laugh.

The Wardens have played shows in Alberta, B.C., and Saskatchewan, and have their sights set on visiting the rest of the country.
