A 38-year-old Calgary man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his common-law wife, who was reported missing more than two years ago.

Calgary police said Saturday that the man, identified as the common-law husband of Lisa Michelle Mitchell, had been taken into custody after investigators found human remains inside Mitchell’s house in southeast Calgary.

Allan Shyback was arrested at a undisclosed location outside Calgary, police said. He has been charged with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains.

Police had been investigating the disappearance of Mitchell, 31, who was last seen at her home on Oct. 29, 2012. After not hearing from Mitchell, her family became concerned and reported her missing in November 2012.

After her disappearance, Mitchell’s two children continued to live at the home with the suspect. Police say he is the biological father of one of the children.

Police said that the children, ages 5 and 7, are their “primary concern” at this point.

“They are being taken care of at this time, but obviously, they’re going to need some additional resources later on,” said Sgt. John Hebert, of Calgary’s Missing Persons Team.

Calgary’s forensic crime scene unit remains on scene at the residence. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
