MOUNT ALBION, P.E.I. -- Police in Prince Edward Island say they are concerned for the health of a woman who gave birth to a newborn whose body was found outside a church last weekend.

Police were called after caretakers at the Birch Hill Free Church of Scotland in Mount Albion, east of Charlottetown, discovered the body on Sunday around 2:30 p.m.

RCMP Const. Jullie Rogers-Marsh says an autopsy has been completed and police are awaiting the results.

She says the mother of the child has recently given birth and may require medical attention to ensure she doesn't develop a potentially serious infection.

The RCMP has declined to reveal the gender of the child, saying the Mounties are withholding that information as part of their investigation.

Anyone with information about the baby or the mother are asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
