A cheeky police report about a prankster who interrupted a Toronto Blue Jays game back in the spring is getting attention on social media for poking fun at the languishing baseball team.
The police report is just coming to light now. The incident that prompted the report happened May 5 during a game against the Seattle Mariners in downtown Toronto. In the crowd was Joe Kelly, who after realizing he was getting too old for pranks, decided to try just one more.
“I came to the realization that this is the last time, before life gets truly serious, that I’m going to be able to do something stupid,” Kelly said in an interview with CTV Toronto.
Kelly descended on the Rogers Centre and took a little jog on the field, a stunt that prompted security to tackle Kelly at third base – where he was arrested and charged with mischief.
Rogers Centre officials may not have been amused, but a Toronto police officer who filled out an incident report decided to make light of the situation.
“On May 5, 2013 … the Toronto Blue Jays were surprisingly winning against the underrated Seattle Mariners,” it read.
The report continues: “The accused … in what can only be described as an attempt to inject some kind of spark in our listless Jays, ran onto the field ‘interrupting’ the game, giving Jays fans a brief respite from their season long agony.”
A copy of the report, which had both Kelly and the police officer’s name redacted, has been making the rounds online.
Meanwhile, Kelly said he respects the Toronto Police Service for taking a “humane” approach to the incident.
The charges were dropped in return for a donation to charity. On his website, Kelly says he donated $1,000 to the Jays Care Foundation. He also apologized to the security staff who had to tackle him.
“I know it was stupid, but I hope people got a laugh out of it,” Kelly now says, adding he has “no desire” to do it again.
Though they won that fateful night, the Blue Jays are currently in last place in AL East Division standings.
