OTTAWA -- Two bodies have been recovered from a car that had gone through the ice in the Ottawa River near the community of Fitzroy Harbour.

The vehicle was recovered from the icy river just before midnight.

The car was spotted last Sunday after a police officer detected signs that a car may have gone through the ice on Saturday.

Police, however, have had difficulty recovering the vehicle because of the freezing water, the current and poor visibility in the river.

Police had said they were considering using dynamite to blast a hole in the ice large enough to have a heavy-duty crane retrieve the car.

Ottawa Police have not yet identified the two people in the car and say the investigation continues.
