Police say they are considering reckless driving charges against an individual who executed a dangerous passing manoeuvre between two cars, in a stunt captured on dash cam video in Alberta.

The video shows a black Infiniti darting between two BMWs on the two-lane QEII Highway, near Red Deer, Alta. The speeding vehicle does not appear to wait for an opening in the traffic, and straddles the white lane divider to get past the other cars.

A man named Anton, who shot the video from the left lane on his dash cam, said the driver tried to "show off" with the move.

"That was just absolutely crazy," he told CTV Calgary on Tuesday. "If one of those cars in front moved a little bit closer to each other, that's it. It would be an accident."

A woman named Katrina, who was driving the blue BMW in the left lane, said she was shocked by the move. "I just looked at the driver in the white BMW (on the right) in disbelief," she told CTV Calgary. "Like, did that just really happen? Did he just do that?"

Anton, the Infiniti driver and the BMW drivers were all on their way to car enthusiasts' gathering at a parking lot on Sunday.

Katrina said she confronted the Infiniti driver at the car event. "As car enthusiasts, we're no stranger to some spirited driving here and there," she said. "But at no point, at no point are we ever going to do anything like that."

RCMP also questioned the driver, obtained the dash cam video and took witness statements at the gathering.

Cpl. Kevin Halwa of Sylvan Lake RCMP said police are considering laying a dangerous driving charge.

"The video itself is of course a great concern, not only to the general public but to the driver himself," Halwa told CTV Calgary. "This sort of reckless behaviour is something we take very seriously."

In the video, the Infiniti can be seen moving onto the shoulder to pass a pickup truck in the distance, after executing the mid-lane pass.

Anton said Katrina's blue BMW was not hogging the fast lane at the time of the stunt. "If you watch the full video you will be able to see that everything was OK," he said. "Nobody occupied and abused the left lane."

Katrina says she was driving at about 110 kilometres an hour at the time of the incident.
