OTTAWA -- An Ottawa teaching assistant is facing charges in connection with allegations that she was involved in a sexual relationship with a then 15-year-old student.

It's alleged the relationship with the boy began in September 2011 when the accused was in the course of her duties as an educational assistant while employed by the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.

Katherine Kitts, 44, is charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation and telecommunication with a person under 18 for specific criminal offences.

The school board released a statement Tuesday saying the accused has been placed on leave while the investigation is underway.

It says it is co-operating fully with Ottawa police to assist in their investigation.

The statement says the school district's primary focus is the safety and well-being of students and staff and that resources and support will be made available to those in need.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Ottawa police sexual assault and child abuse section or Crime Stoppers.
