An Ottawa-area mother is in mourning after her daughter died in a balcony collapse at the Mexico resort where she was honeymooning.

Shannon Amy Guy of Carleton Place, Ont., was killed Wednesday when the third-floor balcony she was standing on suddenly collapsed. Two other people were also injured.

The couple had been staying at the Oasis Tulum resort in the Mayan Riviera. Guy's husband Paul had been taking pictures of Shannon and another Canadian couple on the balcony when it somehow broke away, killing Guy.

The 24-year-old leaves behind two daughters: 3-year-old Kaidence, and 9-month-old Harmony.

Guy's mother, Cathy Harker, says Paul's father broke the news to her.

"Paul's dad came over to my house to tell me there had been the accident and that Shannon didn't make it," she told CTV Ottawa by telephone Thursday.

She says Paul's father is heading to Mexico Friday to help his son, who Harker says is distraught and "feeling very alone" after the accident.

Harker says Shannon and Paul married in August, but waited until this week to celebrate with a honeymoon holiday.

"They just really wanted to get married and have all the family there that they could," she said of the wedding day. "It was a beautiful day … I wouldn't have missed it for the world, I'm glad I got to see it."

Harker says she can't believe that the honeymoon ended this way.

"(I'm) still in shock and disbelief. And I just wish I could see my baby," she added.

"…She was my oldest baby, wonderful girl, always smiling and laughing and thought the world of her two little girls."

The Department of Foreign Affairs says representatives are investigating the accident.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the Canadian who passed away and the 2 other Canadians who were injured," a Foreign Affairs spokesperson said in a statement Thursday.

“Canadian consular officials in Mexico are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information and are providing consular assistance to those affected.”

Plans are now being made to return Guy's body to Canada.

There are reports a balcony collapse killed a woman at the same hotel two years ago.
