The aunt and uncle of a 10-year-old boy who police allege was locked in a bedroom for as long as two years have agreed to surrender their passports until the charges they face are resolved.

The couple, who cannot be identified, appeared in a London, Ont., courtroom Thursday and agreed not to apply to leave Canada until their case is over.

Their lawyer, Norm Peel, had a Korean interpreter and friend stay by them in court to ensure they understood the proceedings.

They are charged with forcible confinement and failing to provide the necessaries of life after the boy was found at their southeast London home malnourished, pale and underweight at the end of May. His clothes and bed were soaked in urine.

Police said at the time that the Children’s Aid Society of London and Middlesex had received an anonymous tip from the public to check on the welfare of a child. CAS called police to help caseworkers enter the home.

The boy was found locked in the master bedroom. Although it had an ensuite bathroom, the entire home was in squalid condition, police said at the time.

The boy’s aunt and uncle were his legal guardians and his parents live outside the country. The couple also have a biological nine-year-old daughter.

CAS took both of the children into their care. They currently reside in separate foster homes.

The boy has regained his strength and is eager to start attending school in September, CTV London’s Nick Paparella reported Thursday. The nine-year-old girl had been attending school, and police said back in May they were unsure how much she knew about her cousin.

The couple left the courthouse Thursday hand-in-hand and refused to say anything to reporters.

“My lawyer told me not to say anything,” the man said before he and his wife got into a blue car and drove away.

Their lawyer, Norm Peel, said he will meet with the Crown in order to see “what we’re facing” before advising his clients how to plead.

“They’re in Canada and they have a right to be presumed innocent until the process says otherwise,” Peel told reporters outside court.

Peel refused to say whether the couple has had recent contact with their daughter.

Their next court appearance is scheduled for July 24.
