A school bus full of teenagers was knocked over by the impact of a crash with a small car on Friday afternoon.

An 18-year-old woman who was in the car at the time of the crash died hours after being rushed to hospital. A 19-year-old man who was also in the car remains in critical condition.

The 40 College-Saint-Hilaire students on the bus were all taken to hospital.

Capt.Yannick Parent from the Régie intermunicipale Richelieu Saint-Laurent described the impact as “very violent.”

Emergency personnel treated 47 people on the scene. Thirty-nine students were taken to hospital by bus or by their parents, while six others with more serious injuries were taken by ambulance.

The cause of the crash is unknown, police said Friday, but neighbours say people regularly speed in the area.

Mont-St-Hilaire is about 35 kilometres east of Montreal.
