A shooting at a New Year’s Eve house party has left one person dead and six wounded in Calgary.

Police have not named the man who succumbed to his injuries in hospital Thursday afternoon.

However, a family member told CTV Calgary earlier in the day that Abdullahi Ahmed was shot in the forehead and was unlikely to survive.

Leila Edwards said Ahmed was in his mid-20s and was of Somalian heritage. He had moved to Calgary from Toronto six or seven years ago.

Six others were injured after the party ended in gunfire early Thursday morning.

Officials say the severity of these injuries varies, but that none are life-threatening. Police are still searching for one or more suspects.

Officers respond to reports of gunfire

Police were called to a home in the 1900 block of 36th Street S.W. shortly after 5 a.m., when several people reported hearing gunshots in the area.

The shooting occurred in Calgary's quiet Killarney neighbourhood, located about six kilometres southwest from the downtown core.

Upon arrival, police found five people with gunshot wounds inside and outside the home. Two others later showed up at nearby hospitals, also suffering gunshot wounds.

More than 50 attendees were at the party, many of whom stayed at the scene and were questioned by police.

Most of the party-goers were members of Calgary’s Somali community and police are asking them and others to help in the investigation.

Police are calling the shooting an isolated incident.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 403-266-1234, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
