BURTON, N.B. -- A 36-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of a two-year-old girl in New Brunswick more than 11 years ago.

James Paul Turpin of Eel River Bar, N.B., was arrested Tuesday, and appeared in Burton Provincial Court Wednesday afternoon.

He is charged in relation to the death of Kennedy Corrigan of Central Blissville, who died in hospital on April 9th, 2004 after suffering a head injury in her home.

The case is featured on the New Brunswick RCMP's website as one of the province's unsolved homicides and suspicious deaths.

"Corrigan died as a result of a massive brain injury sustained from allegedly falling in the tub and bumping her head," the website states.

RCMP Const. Jullie Rogers-Marsh said medical evidence at the time of her death supported the police theory of a non-accidental death but was not definitive.

She said new evidence led to the arrest.

In a statement, police allege that Kennedy was in Turpin's care at the time she was injured and she died from her injuries a few days later.

"Turpin was living in the house at the time but is not related to Kennedy Corrigan. The police do not believe anyone else was involved in her death," the statement reads.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

Turpin has been remanded and will return to court June 22.
