Bill Beaton’s $5,400 custom-made wheelchair was stolen almost 13 years to the day since his motorcycle accident.

“It was so weird that it happened on the eve of my accident,” Beaton told CTV Atlantic.

The chair was stolen from the back of Beaton’s restaurant in Antigonish, N.S. on May 23.

Beaton said he would often leave the chair at the back of the restaurant if he was hopping in his truck to make a quick trip.

When Beaton backed in after his outing he first thought one of the girls at the restaurant had taken the wheelchair inside but soon realized that wasn’t the case.

“I called the girls and said ‘can you get my chair?’ She said ‘it’s not here’,” he said.

While the back of the restaurant is visible from the highway, Beaton is still confused as to why someone would steal a wheelchair.

“I see like maybe a bicycle or like people’s vehicles get stolen, but what are you going to do with [a wheelchair]?” he said.

Beaton’s wife, Alexis Beaton, has been using social media to spread the word about the incident with the hope that someone might be able to locate the chair.

“Words cannot begin to express my feelings of anger, disgust, sadness, disappointment and complete shock,” she wrote on Facebook. “I am putting this out there in hopes that someone may have seen something or know something. We simply need the chair back.”

The post has already been shared over 1,300 times, which is encouraging for Alexis.

“It’s heartwarming, you know, it made you feel good about the community and stuff and everyone willing to help and just to see how far it’s gone,” she told CTV Atlantic.

RCMP are currently investigating and checking surveillance cameras from local businesses for clues.
