A mother in London, Ont., delivered her own baby at home on Wednesday, as she was preparing to head to the hospital.

Mandy Campbell said she was having contractions when she suddenly felt her daughter's head coming. Campbell's husband and two other children were fast asleep upstairs at the time, so the quick-thinking mother ran to a bathroom and delivered her own baby.

"I reached down with one hand, got her head, reached with my other hand, pulled her out on top of me," Campbell told CTV London on Wednesday. "I noticed she was a little bit purple so I just flipped her over, got her to cough. She cried a little bit so I just held her and that’s what happened."

Minutes after the surprise delivery, Campbell's parents arrived, expecting to watch their daughter's two other children as Campbell headed to the hospital. But to their shock, baby Chelsea had already made her debut.

"It was so surreal," Campbell's mother said. "I always thought I didn't want to be a mom in the delivery room because you don't want to see your daughter in pain, but this was amazing. It was beautiful."

Campbell's parents called 911 and took care of their daughter and new grandchild until the paramedics arrived.

"I started to pass out, so my dad ran in and grabbed the baby before I did pass out. And my mother held me up on the toilet until the paramedics came in," Campbell recalled.

Campbell's mother said her son-in-law was still asleep at the time. She said the delivery happened so quickly they didn't have time to wake him up and it was actually the lights from the ambulance that awoke him.

"I went downstairs and to my surprise, there was actually a baby in my house," said Nathan Campbell. "It's so amazing. She did such a wonderful job and I am so proud of her."

Campbell and Chelsea were taken to hospital, where they were both given a clean bill of health.

They have since returned home.

Campbell said the experience is still surreal to her and she can't believe how calm she was throughout the delivery.

"I've seen it on TV. I've seen it happen in the movies. And I never thought it would happen to me," she said. "I feel like a bit of a superhero."

Campbell adds she is thankful Wednesday's delivery wasn't her first.
