Up to a thousand student demonstrators hit the streets of Montreal late Tuesday to protest Quebec’s austerity plan, one night after police shut down one of their rallies.

On Tuesday night police in riot gear once again dispersed smoke and tried to break up the march.

An Instagram video recorded by CTV Montreal’s Kevin Gallagher showed police rushing through the streets.

Monday night’s protest was stopped within minutes, leading to one arrest.

Nearly 150 students from Concordia University and several CEGEPs had gathered downtown, but the demonstration was declared illegal because they had failed to provide police with a planned protest route.

Student groups say they will continue their protests over the next few weeks, and are calling their rallies Printemps2015 or Spring2015.
