A Moncton, N.B. man with the same brain cancer as Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip will be going to the band’s final show in Kingston, Ont. after his wife’s Facebook post went viral.

Amanda DeRoche’s post, which has been shared more than 5,000 times, shared the details of her husband’s diagnosis, expressed his love for the Tragically Hip and described how much she wanted to get him tickets to one of their final shows.

“As screwed up as it may seem, our coping mechanism has been humour,” Amanda DeRoche wrote in her Facebook post. “Jason couldn’t help himself but remark that, ‘well at least I have the same cancer as Gord Downie!’”

Shortly after making the post, Paul Fay, the brother of drummer Johnny Fay, contacted Amanda DeRoche with an offer of two tickets to the band’s final show.

The Tragically Hip kicked off their farewell tour on Friday in Victoria, B.C. and will be playing their last show in Kingston, Ont. on Aug. 20.

According to Jason DeRoche, he and his wife Amanda had to try and keep their emotions in check when they received the phone call about the tickets. After the call, the two say they sat in complete disbelief that someone would something so nice for them.

“When she posted it, she told me after the fact and I thought “well a couple hundred people will see it,” said Jason DeRoche. “I really didn’t think that any of this would happen, that’s for sure."

Jason DeRoche underwent a craniotomy about a month ago to have as much of the tumour removed as possible and will be starting radiation this week.

The two will fly down to Kingston, Ont. on Friday Aug. 19, after Jason Deroche has a radiation appointment, and will fly back home that Sunday in time for his next appointment.

“The support we’ve gotten nationally has been just incredible and overwhelming,” said Jason DeRoche. “We’re just getting ready and getting healthy and working hard at physio to be as ready for this second part of the leg.”

In the post, Amanda DeRoche also shared the overwhelming cost of her husband’s treatment saying, “the province we live in (N.B.) is the only province in Canada that does not cover the cost of the chemotherapy pills used to fight brain cancer.”

They have since created a GoFundMe page where more than $4,000 has already been raised to help with their medical bills.
