Aviation officials and emergency responders have found the small plane carrying three Canadians that disappeared from radar above northern Pennsylvania on Sunday night.

It is not known if the plane crashed or if there were any injuries to those on board.

Lt. Col. Will Schlosser of the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary says there is an active police investigation involving the passengers that will include officials from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board.

The single-engine Piper Cherokee aircraft was flying from Richmond International Airport in Virginia to St. Catharines/Niagara District Airport in southern Ontario when it changed course to avoid a thunderstorm.

The FAA in Cleveland Center alerted authorities after losing radar and radio contact with the aircraft near Keating Summit, Pa. just before 7 p.m. ET.

The FAA had issued a notice to air traffic facilities, pilots and airports to report any sightings of the aircraft.

Local fire departments and rescue teams combed the woods in the area for several hours Sunday night into early Monday morning before regrouping to begin again at daylight.
