HALIFAX -- Power companies in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia say they're doing everything possible to restore electricity to thousands of customers now into their sixth day of darkness.

About 35,000 households and businesses were without power as of noon in New Brunswick, with more than half of those in the Fredericton area.

NB Power spokeswoman Meghan Gerrish says some outages could drag into next week and the utility is reaching out to customers who will be among the last to be reconnected.

In Nova Scotia, about 3,900 customers are still without power after post-tropical storm Arthur swept through the region Saturday, knocking down trees and power lines.

Kingston resident Bilynda Whiting says she believes the prolonged outages prove how fragile Nova Scotia Power's infrastructure is.

On Wednesday, utility president Bob Hanf said the privately owned company has invested $74 million in the last four years to storm-harden its system, on top of the $60 million it spends annually.
