A 24-year-old Calgary man faces a number of charges after two semi-automatic pistols were discovered in the ceiling of a public hallway at the University of Calgary.

Electrical contractors found a box containing two unloaded, .45 calibre handguns in the university's Earth Sciences building in late August.

Calgary police and campus security launched a seven-week joint investigation.

Police said a person of interest was identified early in the investigation and was monitored for seven weeks. Investigators determined the guns posed minimal risk to university students and staff, as the weapons were related to drug-trafficking.

On Friday, police arrested a former University of Calgary student.

Husayn Nathoo faces a number of charges, including unauthorized procession of a firearm, possession of a weapon obtained by crime and possession of a weapon for a dangerous person.

Nathoo is also facing drug-related charges stemming from an incident that took place on the university campus in early September.

Following the arrest, the University of Calgary thanked Calgary police for conducting a "thorough investigation."

"The university did not receive any threats related to these weapons and at no point was the safety of students, faculty or staff jeopardized," Rick Gysen, of campus security, said in a statement.

Nathoo is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 6.
