Toronto police say a man has been charged after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman who answered his online ad to buy a cat.

Police say they responded to a call about a sexual assault last Thursday in the North York area.

In a statement, police said a 26-year-old woman travelled to an apartment near Yonge Street and Finch Avenue, where she agreed to purchase a cat from a man who had posted an ad on Kijiji.

The man offered the woman some food and drinks, police said.

“She started feeling unwell, so she was led to a bedroom where she was brought to lay down. She was sexually assaulted in that bedroom,” Const. David Hopkinson told CTV Toronto.

Ghenadie Carpov, 52, was arrested on Friday and charged with sexual assault and administering a noxious substance. He appeared in court the same day.

Kijiji issued a statement in response.

“We are saddened to hear about this disturbing case and will fully cooperate with the investigation, as needed. The safety and security of our users is paramount. We are committed to maintaining a safe online community for users,” said Shawn McIntyre, Community Relations and Communications Manager for Kijiji, in a written statement.

Police offered advice for anyone purchasing items off Kijiji. They recommend buyers ask to meet in a public space, not go alone, take a photo of the seller and ask to see a seller’s ID.

“We want to advise people to be very cautious when they’re going out to purchase things, especially on Kijiji ads,” Hopkinson said.

Police are concerned that there may be other victims.
