APPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L. -- The RCMP in Labrador say an inmate escaped from a jail and was on the loose for about four hours before he was apprehended.

The Mounties say they were advised by staff at the Labrador Correctional Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay that a 20-year-old man was seen running into the bush to the east of the facility on Monday at around 5:30 p.m.

Police say they received tips from the public that helped them in their pursuit.

At around 9:30 p.m., officers arrested Jason Clarke and took him into custody without incident.

The Labrador Correctional Centre is a minimum- and medium-security institution.
