When fire destroyed their home last Christmas, Chantal Clement and Jacques Corbeil didn’t have insurance.

But what the Chateauguay, Que., couple did have was an entire community willing to come together and help them rebuild their lives.

Now, five months and $300,000 worth of donations later, the couple and their two sons have the keys to a brand new house.

The new homeowners and many of their neighbours were brought to tears when the family officially moved in during a celebration on Saturday.

“It’s the most beautiful house I have ever seen, for sure. And it's full of love,” Clement said. “You feel the warmth when you go in there you. You feel like nothing bad is going to happen anymore.”

The house-building project was spearheaded by electrician Michel Enault, who didn’t know the family personally, but wanted to lend a helping hand after reading about the fire in the news.

“I called a friend, a plumber, I said, ‘I'm going to do this, are you in?’ He goes, ‘yeah I'm in,’” said Enault. “I called another guy and said, ‘do you want to do this?’ He said, ‘yeah, I'm in.’”

Enault also called other construction companies, who agreed to help create a dream home for the two boys and their parents.

Corbeil said the generosity has been overwhelming.

“It's hard to find words to say thank you to everybody,” said Corbeil. “It’s unbelievable.”
