Police say a burned-out Porsche was deliberately set on fire and abandoned in a desolate field outside Halifax where area residents say similar incidents have happened before.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on Sunday, police were called to an area in Harrietsfield, N.S., a rural municipality just west of Halifax, where they found the 2009 Porsche Cayenne engulfed in flames.

The vehicle’s owner had reported it stolen earlier.

Loud popping and black smoke lead police and fire crews to the deserted location.

“When our officers arrived they found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames,” said Staff Sgt. Andrew Matthews, of Halifax Police. “No one was injured, there was no one around.”

Area residents say it’s not uncommon to see a fire in the woods there. It’s an isolated trail where police confirm they’ve recovered other vehicles in the past.

Michael Ingraham, who has lived nearby for years, says Sunday’s discovery was an all-too-familiar scene.

“It happens here all the time,” Ingraham said. “It’s expected, almost.”

Ingraham told CTV Atlantic he would like to see a stop put to the fires, but he’s not sure what would work.

“Other than blocking the road off so they wouldn’t be able to get up there,” he said. “That would be the only way to do it.”

The Porsche Cayenne was destroyed, and is now sitting in a scrapyard.
