Summer won’t be officially over for another two weeks, but residents of southern Alberta got an early taste of winter Monday with several centimetres of snow.
Environment Canada issued snowfall warnings and special weather statements for more than a dozen cities and regions, including Calgary, Airdrie, Canmore, High River and Banff National Park.
The warnings for Calgary ended by Monday afternoon, but chilly temperatures are expected to last until Thursday.
It was a drastic change in weather conditions from Sunday, when a high of 25 Celsius was recorded in the city.
Calgary is no stranger to autumn snow, but this kind of weather in early September is unusual.
Last year, the city’s first snowfall came on Oct. 27. In 2012, the first flakes were seen on Oct. 20.
Calgary’s snowfall record for Sept. 8 was set back in 1921, when 12 cm of snow fell in the city.
