Four Canadian universities rank among the top ten universities in the world for their programs in nursing, geography, education and veterinary science, according to a U.K.-based study.
Of all the institutions listed in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the University of Toronto is the top Canadian school, ranking third for nursing. The University of Alberta is close behind, with a fourth place ranking.
The University of British Columbia (UBC) ranks fifth in the world for geography and ninth for education. Meanwhile, the University of Guelph dropped four places but still ranks eighth – while the University of Toronto is ranked tenth for geography.
The study was published Tuesday on topuniversities.com, a career and education network based in the U.K. Two sets of rankings are published every fall and spring – the first compares universities generally across the world, while the second assesses their merit according to discipline.
This year, 24 Canadian universities were represented in the universities ranking list, which included more than 4,000 worldwide.
"Canadian universities are extremely attractive," Simona Bizzozero, head of public relations at QS told CTV News. "It's one of the foremost study destinations globally, among the U.S., U.K. and Australia."
But students looking to study abroad are also increasingly looking to countries like China and Brazil. "China - being the second largest economy in the world and seriously threatening the economic dominance of the U.S., has invested heavily in research and education and has produced a huge number of graduates," she adds. "They were once the largest importer of students - now they're attracting studies across Asia."
