The Ontario Provincial Police have laid charges in connection with a fatal two-vehicle crash in southwestern Ontario that left a 29-year-old woman dead and her infant son in hospital.

Investigators said Susana Dumitru was pronounced dead in hospital and her two-month old son George was airlifted to a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries. Police said the baby is undergoing surgery at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. The woman's husband Razvan and his mother suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Police say the collision occurred at approximately 7:52 p.m. on Sunday evening, on Highway 7 near Trussler Road in Wilmot Township, just west of Kitchener, Ont. They said that a vehicle with four occupants was travelling in the westbound lanes of the highway when it was struck from behind by another vehicle.

The male driver of the second vehicle, 26-year-old Ahmed Darwish from Kitchener, Ont., has been arrested and is in the custody of the Cambridge OPP. He is facing charges that include impaired driving causing death.

Darwish, who worked as a financial adviser, appeared briefly in a Kitchener court on Monday. He looked sombre as he stood in the prisoner’s box. His case will be adjourned for a few days.

Outside court, Darwish’s family members refused to speak to reporters.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, a spokesperson for the OPP’s Highway Safety Division, asked that anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information about it to call the Cambridge OPP detachment.
