HALIFAX -- Police in Halifax are warning people about a scam they allege has defrauded people who use the social networking app called WeChat.

Police say they've received three complaints from users of the app who say they've been defrauded by people they met on the mobile text and voice messaging service.

They allege that scammers connect with people on the app and persuade them to purchase various gift cards in exchange for promises to meet for sexual services.

Police say they then convince the users to send them the gift cards' pin numbers and online shopping credits.

The communication stops and the victim loses the money used to purchase the items.
