OTTAWA - Governor General David Johnston's Canada Day message challenges Canadians to find ways to help others.

Johnston says he and his wife Sharon have connected with people across the country and around the world, and honoured Canadians for their accomplishments, bravery and compassion.

Johnston says they see Canadians discovering what he calls "giving moments" -- ways in which people are making their communities better places to live.

He says giving moments are embodied in volunteers -- who give of their time and talent -- and philanthropists -- who donate to a variety of causes.

Johnston says when all these moments are added up, they create a picture of a strong, compassionate Canada.

He says on Canada Day, we celebrate all that is exceptional about our country, but we must not gloss over the fact that there are those who still need help.

Johnston urges all Canadians to discover what they have to give to create a better future.
