PERTH-ANDOVER, N.B. -- A state of emergency remains in effect in a western New Brunswick village over flooding concerns, though officials say an immediate threat from a massive ice jam appears to have stabilized.

Dan Dionne, the chief administrative officer for Perth-Andover, says most of the heavy ice on the St. John River has moved downstream from the community and water levels have dropped about two metres since Sunday.

Dionne says slushy ice is now moving on the river and some open water can be seen, but officials are continuing to monitor another ice jam further up the river at the Grand Falls dam.

He says a mandatory evacuation that was ordered on the weekend for about 300 people remains in effect but will be reassessed later today.

A flood in 2012 destroyed 75 buildings in the community and prompted the relocation of some homes to higher ground.
