Five people are dead following a multi-vehicle crash north of Regina Tuesday morning, RCMP say.
Mounties from the White Butte and Southey divisions were called to the scene on Highway 6 about 15 km north of Regina around mid-morning Tuesday.
Two adults, one male and one female, who were riding in a 2014 grey Ford Focus were taken to hospital in Regina with “undetermined” injuries, Saskatchewan RCMP said in a news release.
Five adults, three men and two women, died at the scene. One male was the lone occupant of a 2005 blue Chevrolet Avalanche, while the four other victims were in a 2003 blue Subaru Outback.
“Hwy #6 is completely blocked in both directions,” the release went on. “Traffic is being rerouted around the accident scene.”
Drivers should expect delays for much of the day, and are being told to avoid the area if they can.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is still in its early stages, police said, and collision analysts are on the scene. RCMP spokesperson Mandy Maier said investigators are trying to determine whether drifting snow in the area was a factor in the crash.
Police are working to identify all of the victims and will have to notify next of kin before their identities are made public.
