"They look at each other for about 60 seconds in kind of bewilderment and silence and one of those Highlanders gives off a battle cry ‘YEAH!’ and off they go.”

Watch battlefield guide Faye Domonkos set the scene for CTV’s Todd Battis standing where Canadian soldiers stood 100 years ago on the most heavily defended portion of Vimy Ridge.

The soldiers carried heavy gear, full of mud as gun fire rained down on them. Those things along with a last minute change in battle plans left the 4th Division battered and bruised.

“They’re running out of ammunition, they’re exhausted and there are a lot of casualties. They don’t have enough time and they don’t have enough strength to continue,” Domonkos said.
