A ferry that was stuck in ice off Cape Breton for 24 hours has finally arrived at its destination in Newfoundland.

Approximately 190 passengers were stranded aboard a Marine Atlantic ferry for more than a day when the vessel got stuck in thick ice Monday night, after leaving North Sydney, N.S., for Port Aux Basques, N.L.

A Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker travelled several hours to clear the path.

A Marine Atlantic spokesperson said easterly winds pushing ice toward Cape Breton were causing problems for ferries travelling the Cabot Strait.

The passengers aboard MV Highlanders were never in any danger and had access to plenty of food as they waited to be rescued.
